9th Annual “Be a HERO” Golf Tournament – Keeps getting better each year!
June 3, 2009 – On a beautiful spring day,
the 9th Annual “Be a HERO” Golf Tournament hosted by
Medilink and sponsored by Wawa was held on Wednesday May 13, 2009
at Sand Barrens Golf Club in Swainton, NJ. This year’s
tournament, which included 156 golfers, and multiple loyal sponsors
raised close to $40,000 for the HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers®.
Funds raised will be used to continue the HERO Campaign’s
programs that promote the use of safe and sober designated drivers. “I
would like to thank all our sponsors and players today, who are
helping us to save lives and prevent drunk driving tragedies” said
Bill Elliott, chairman and founder of the HERO Campaign during
the event.
The day’s events included lunch compliments of Applebees®, a Putting
Contest by Millennium Radio, the famous “Tin Cup” Challenge, a 1:00pm
Shotgun Start Scramble Format, beverage stations by Glaceau Smart Water, dinner,
and a silent auction by master of ceremonies Gabe Staino.
New to the tournament this year was the chance for a foursome to buy a Scott
Ionno 300+ Yard Drive. Scott is a professional long driver. In 2006 he won “Most
Accurate Driver of the Golf Ball in North America” at “The Pinnacle
Exceptional Driver Championship”.
The 2009 “Tin Cup” Challenge winner was
Scott Graham. In the putting contest, George
Tzaferos took the top prize. And the 2009 winning foursome
was Nick Rosetti, Ryan Rosetti, Brad Bachman and Rick Rosetti.
The HERO Campaign and Golf Committee members are very
appreciative of all of the loyal and new golfers, sponsors
and volunteers who have made this event grow over the
past 9 years. To view a list of our sponsors and donors, please

The HERO Campaign has grown to become
a national movement dedicated to ending drunken driving
by promoting the use of safe and sober designated drivers. The Campaign’s most recent accomplishment was
being adopted by the U.S. Navy. The Campaign is named for Ensign John R. Elliott who
was killed by a drunken driver on his way home for
his mother’s birthday in July of 2000. While
at the Naval Academy, John was selected the outstanding
HERO (Human Education Resource Officer) in his graduating
class, the inspiration for the HERO Campaign, which
is now saving lives nationwide.
