“Hurley in the Morning” Golf Open Supports HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers®
Mays Landing, NJ (July 2009) The John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers® received a generous donation of $11,000 from the 2nd Annual “Hurley in the Morning” Golf Open presented by Martin and Sheila O’Boyle. The tournament was held on June 19th at Mays Landing Country Club with over 100 golfers and a guest appearance by retired Flyers goalie Bernie Parent.
"I would like to thank Harry Hurley, Martin and Sheila O’Boyle, and all the tournament players, sponsors and volunteers whose efforts benefitted the HERO Campaign and this year’s worthy charities," said HERO founder Bill Elliott. “This year’s donation will help us promote our life saving message through highway billboards, and in schools, colleges, taverns and businesses throughout New Jersey and across the country.”
In addition to the HERO Campaign the “Hurley in the Morning” Golf Open supported The G. Larry James Legacy Fund; F.A.C.E.S. Autism Support Network of Atlantic County; and the Dean Randazzo Cancer Foundation
The HERO Campaign will continue to be a beneficiary of the 3rd Annual "Hurley in the Morning Golf Open" scheduled for Friday, June 20, 2010 at The Mays Landing Golf and Country Club.
The HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers® is named in memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey and promotes the use of sober designated drivers with its life saving message: Be a HERO. Be a Designated Driver®. John was killed by a drunken driver in July 2000, two months after graduating with merit from the United States Naval Academy, where he was named the Outstanding HERO (Human Education Resource Officer) of his class.
Recently, the U.S. Navy Fleet Forces Command adopted the HERO Campaign, joining the states of New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia and New York, and professional sports teams including the Philadelphia Phillies, Tampa Bay Rays, New York Giants and New England Patriots.
